7 Best Hotels and Motels in Colwood British Columbia Canada

by Shawn

Colwood, a city of approximately 15,000 people, lies on Vancouver Island, to the southwest of Victoria. Colwood is built near Esquimalt Lagoon, a beach and wildlife preserve. The city was originally one of four farms established by the Hudson’s Bay Company to supply the increasing population of nearby Fort Victoria.

Fisgard Lighthouse, a local landmark and one of Canada’s National Historic Sites, was built in 1860. The lighthouse, once a beacon for the British Royal Navy, was automated in 1929, but remains a yearly tourist attraction. Between October and December, tourists come to the area to witness the annual salmon run at Goldstream Provincial Park.

Another famous attraction in Colwood is Hatley Castle, which lies on the grounds of Royal Roads University. The castle has been featured in many films, most recently as Professor Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters in the “X-Men” movie franchise. The castle requires a modest admission, but has generous and scenic grounds to wander. Those with an interest in art and history can take in culture at the Coast Collective Arts Centre or the Fire Fighter’s Museum, while outdoorsy types can ride or jog along the Galloping Goose Regional Trail.

Famous for its wildlife and natural beauty, Colwood is home to a National Migratory Bird Sanctuary. Other attractions include the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre, the Royal Colwood Golf Club, Fort Rodd Hill, and the Q Centre. Travelers can enjoy ribs or calamari at the Orca Grillhouse, buy a sourdough loaf or cookies at the Royal Bay Bakery, or enjoy a slice of Hawaiian pizza at Villages Pizza. After visiting the local historic sites (or taking in a few holes of golf), relax with beer and wings at the Country Rose pub.

Colwood is a choice destination for nature lovers. Besides golf, common outdoor activities in Colwood include biking, birding, boating, fishing, and outdoor team sports.
